Mindful Self-Compassion

The Self-Compassion Institute is the heart-child of Dr. Kristen Neff. She wrote several books as well as co-created the ‘Mindfulness Self-Compassion’ courses (a certified Mindful Self-Compassion instructor also teaches at Imagine Mindfulness, see here). One of her books is Fierce Self-Compassion: “Fierce Self-Compassion” involves protecting, providing for and motivating ourselves. This book expands on how self-compassion can be used to transform ourselves and the world around us.

Chris Germer is a co-author with Kristen of the book Mindful Self-Compassion for Burnout and a well-know teacher in his own right. His website lists several other books he has written. Ela Compton, Imagine's Self-Compassion instructor, interviewed Chris. You can find the interview (in 2 parts) on this page

Mindfulness Finding Peace in a Frantic World.

This is the website that goes with two books (Frantic world and Deeper mindfulness), both co-authored by Professor Mark Williams of Oxford University, co-developer of MBCT and inspiring meditation teacher.

Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh was a very well known writer, poet and Buddhist monk. This Zen Master was a global spiritual leader, poet and peace activist, revered around the world for his pioneering teachings on mindfulness, global ethics and peace. Often referred to as the ‘father of mindfulness’ and nominated for the Nobel peace prize In 1967 by Martin Luther King.  You can read more about him here: Thich Nhat Hanh | Plum Village or by searching for his name or books online.

Of specific interest might be the book: “Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet”. "A vital approach to combating climate change and creating a better world for us and our future generations—from beloved Buddhist and environmental activist Thich Nhat Hanh". There is even a class to accompany it (https://plumvillage.org/courses/zen-and-the-art-of-saving-the-planet).

We face a potent intersection of crises: ecological destruction, global warming, inflation, rising inequality, racial injustice, and the lasting impacts of a devastating pandemic. As shown time and time again, the situation is beyond urgent. To face these challenges, we need to find ways to strengthen our clarity, compassion, and courage to act. As beloved Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh said, “When you wake up and you see that the Earth is not just the environment, the Earth is us, you touch the nature of interbeing.”
